WILDERNESS VOICE: NEW YEAR's FORK ON THE ROAD

EACH NEW YEAR OFFERS A FORK ON THE ROAD

Once again, a New Year has come putting to rest both victories and defeats now past. Once again, it’s time to set sights toward horizons new with well-intended commitments: Resolutions of enormous sorts that may or may not get past the first few coming months. But bottom line, between you and that new horizon there’s a vast ocean with ever-changing waves threatening both the challenges and opportunities you’ll need to traverse. So, buckle up and firmly hold the rudder of your ship. But for now, at least through January: Don’t Worry! Be Happy!

Make, sort and collect wonderful memories to fill your albums with kodak moments. You’ll need them to justify the self-inflicted ball and chain of credit card bills waiting to make you an indentured servant at least through February and March. THE WATCHFUL EYE OF A.I. is assuring the merciless wheels of today’s economic machine you’ll have nowhere to hide. WOW! Ain’t that reality a swift kick where the sun don’t shine.

Nonetheless, FIGHT FOR THE NEW TOMORROW your resolutions are hoping to achieve! Pick your targets, paths and role models well because face it: We’re moving into a global society with its own batch of political, economic and religious agendas where the almighty dollar is God. At the end of the ever-narrowing road we’re on there’s a fork: Utopia (Heaven on Earth) or Dystopia (the Hounds of Hell Unleashed). And guess who’s winning!

Although America has attempted many forms of Utopia since the 1600’s (note 1820-50, 1960-80, 2020-26) with many ideologies (eco, economic, religious, secular) in many places (Vermont, Texas, Missouri, N.Y./N.J.), unlike abroad (Australia, Mexico, Nordic Countries) many of its efforts have been short lived. Yet the vision has not only consistently survived but is still being attempted and gaining momentum. With historic movements in mind (Shakers, Mormons, Amish, Hassidic, Hippies) some have gone as far as saying America has always been an evolving Utopian Experiment.

Yet, often presented as both a warning and response to current trends, Dystopia, (characterized by surveillance, oppression, and prevalent suffering under dehumanizing elite control) is a utopia gone wrong but spreading like wildfire! Why? Fear of tomorrow’s wants left unaddressed is an excellent motivator warranting desperate measures for desperate times; a perfect opportunity for a hero to rise with a plan offering an immediate shift in direction. How? Media hype, blame focused literature, and enflamed entertainment make good wood to embellish public general despair. And where the original intent for separation of church and state has been distorted, a moral conscience free form of leadership tends to rise and do business with little regard for future consequences.

Yes, it’s a new year full of challenges and opportunities for individuals to make new resolutions; as a person, as a nation, and as citizens of a planet confronting desperate times needing desperate measures warranting personal sacrifice and investment. Make no mistake, we’re coming to a fork in the road. Consider the implications around church/state separation and CHOOSE: UTOPIA OR DYSTOPIA?
