ELDERS! Targeted! Exploited and Waysided!
ELDERS!
Targeted! Exploited and Waysided!
In
present day, a fast paced, techno, socio-economic setting where it seems
people are becoming, or treating each other as little more than commodities to
exchange or expendable burdens to exclude: The implications are far more
reaching than people are taking time to consider. But let’s be honest! If you’re not young,
pretty, techno savvy and marketable: You’re Invisible! So just where do
you think the elderly are falling? Let’s start with elder homeowners, the
homecare services they receive, and their political and economic worth.
Because
of psychological and situational reasons, elderly homeowners are particularly
vulnerable to an assortment of scams. Isolated, lonely and accepting their
state of slowing information processing they fear losing their independence.
So, they turn to being generous and polite while trusting their efforts will
gain them favor. Thus come, offering friendships, good will gestures and
experienced advice leading to quick financial opportunities; title theft,
additional insurance offers, service contracts, refinancing solutions and
reverse mortgage scams, fraudulent home improvement contractors, and yes even
worse – home invaders like friendly tenants intending to exploit the slow and
costly legal process with legal trickery like citing code violations, claims of
disrepair and physical intimidation to squat as many rent-free months as
possible. "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive"
(Sir Walter Scott).
But
that’s not the only home invading termites’ elders face. Pushing to deregulate
and privatize, Home Care is becoming a booming profitable industry with a
tendency to hire the neediest employees. While providing minimal training and
monitoring supervision, they tend to ignore growing news flashing vandalized
personal belongings, liquidated saving accounts, misappropriated fixed incomes
and public benefits: All happening under the threatening blanket of mental,
verbal, emotional and physical abuse. Thus seems the final destiny of
elder economic worth. But hey, it’s not personal – it’s “just about a
neighbor” right? Just Mind Your Business and look away! Really? Open your eyes to the truth:
THE ONLY THING NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING
(Edmond Burke)
While
the FBI receives over 100,000 annual complaints worth an estimated value of $28
+ billion relating to a wide range of financial scams as simple as Sweepstakes/Lottery
and various technical support offers - be forewarned: “Bad men need nothing more
to compass (achieve) their ends than that good men should look on and do
nothing (John Stuart Mill).” So, choose where you want to make a stand but be
mindful: Today’s affluent will be tomorrows elderly and “What goes
around comes around!” Rest sure! Current cutbacks guarantee present safety nets
may have little future place. Point! In a political arena where “We The
People” are being undermined by “Corporate Enterprise” do consider: WHEN
BAD MEN COMBINE, THE GOOD MUST ASSOCIATE ELSE THEY WILL FALL ONE BY ONE. So
please, before too late: Love Thy Neighbor as Thy Self!

Predatory
Tenants Targeting Seniors
TAKING FINANCIAL
ADVANTAGE OF SENIOR CITIZENS AND AVAILABLE HARDSHIP SERVICES
Cunning as a fox in the hen house, some individuals, honing their skills into an art, they line up victims like falling dominoes, they exploit hardship agencies to secure housing
among vulnerable, kindhearted seniors with language barriers and limited legal
savvy with intent to dodge future rent using calculated tactics:
-
Avoiding
documentation
-
Playing the
victim card
-
Claiming delayed
wages from phantom employers
-
Making staggered,
minimal cash pay while exaggerating frequency and amounts
-
Strategically
dragging out court proceedings to extend rent-free stays
-
Complying with
evictions when marshal comes and the next target is secured
It’s a quiet hustle dressed in hardship seeking sympathy. They’re repeat offenders honing an Ingenious and Destructive game one victim at a
time. And, flying under the radar, they may be sitting by you; drinking,
eating, and scheming their next move. So, How You Can Help.
- Discuss
these behaviors in your circles—yes, even at your choice of food and drink

elderly neighbors by encouraging background checks and formal rental
agreements
- Report
suspicious behavior to housing authorities or senior advocacy

Be Alert! Be Aware! And do Beware! Norwalk is rapidly growing and
changing. That good old neighborly, everybody knows everybody and collectively
looking out for each other is succumbing to that transient population being
outpriced from the metropolis. And although most are beautiful people to
welcome and embrace, there are termite-like predators seeking opportunities
where our elders are easy prey.
